IMBC on the road: Copenhagen Beer Celebration

With the tickets purchased back in early November 2012, it didn’t seem possible that six months had gone by so quickly, because the anticipation for CBC had been huge from the minute tickets went on sale. In the intervening months, looking at the brewery announcements, excitement grew steadily.

Finally, on Friday, 3 May, 2013, beer aficionados from all over the world gathered at Sparta Hallen in Copenhagen to have their taste buds dazzled. Wristbands secured after a short queue, and it was into the breach!

It seemed only fitting to start the day with a Doubleblueberryspontanale from the lovely hosts, Mikkeller. From a fruit stout with made with the indigenous Brasilian fruit atemoia, to a cachaça barrel aged barley wine, Way Beer from Brasil were quite the discovery. The number of sours, saisons, and barrel-aged beers was astounding, and the small measures proved to be the key in keeping up with all the high ABV beers. A variety of food stalls rounded out the hall, with risotto, cheese to compliment the beery flavours, chili, hot dogs, and fish cakes with traditional Danish ‘rugbrød’ to help mop up the beer. Finally, the excellent Coffee Collective were on hand to offer caffeinated support.

Another beery highlight was Firestone Walker’s Sixteenth anniversary beer. Blended with eight different Firestone Walker beers, then barrel aged, this imperial stout was immense, with rich vanilla and chocolate notes, and a definite sipping beer.

With beers from Stillwater Artisanal, Westbrook, Amagher Bryghus, ToØl, Jester King, Boxing Cat, Mountain Goat, Three Floyds… and many more, it was difficult not to become giddier than a child in a sweet shop.

Apart from just working one’s way through the bars, there were seminars to attend. Friday’s ‘Session IPA’ seminar, featuring brewers from Kuhnhenn, Founders, Firestone Walker, and Cigar City, turned out to mostly focus on ‘regular’ IPAs, different hopping rates, and each brewery’s IPA recipe evolution.

Saturday’s afternoon sour yeast seminar with Troels Prahl of White Labs and Chad Yakobson of Crooked Stave proved challenging after hitting the Saturday early session, but tasting what the White Labs testing lab produces, not to mention Crooked Stave, was too great an opportunity to pass up. For home brewers and professional brewers, this was surely a most interesting and inspiring seminar. Undoubtedly, there is lots more room for sour and barrel-aged beers produced both in the UK and elsewhere — at least one hopes there will be more readily available soon!

After a full day of supping, the intrepid continued on to the wonderful Mikkeller Bar and the latest addition to the Mikkeller family, the astounding (40 taps, oodles of bottles, spoiled for choice doesn’t even come close) Mikkeller and Friends.

Highlighting all that is innovative, exciting, and experimental in brewing today, CBC pushed the boundaries of palates in the most relaxing and enjoyable way. Thanks to everyone involved for making it happen! Beer education par excellence.

Collaboration with Ilkley Brewery

In a week filled with collaborations, IMBC traveled to Ilkley yesterday to brew Wit Marie with Ilkley Brewery Company. It’s a Belgian wit beer, but with a twist or two, which will not be revealed here!

Luke, Harriet, Chris, and the rest of the Ilkley team were fantastically gracious hosts and we had an amazing day rubbing hops and chatting beer. Plans are afoot to have two versions of the brew on at #IMBC2012, which should be a great opportunity for a direct comparison. We’re excited to taste and share the results. Here a few snaps from the brew day. Thanks again to Ilkley for having us!

A special brew day collaboration: Quantum Brewing Co. and North Tea Power

On a beautiful summer/autumn Sunday morning, Jay, Quantum’s head brewer, Wayne and Jane from North Tea Power, and IndyManBeerCon descended upon the brew house in Stockport to brew up a special beer for #IMBC2012.

Good times were had, delicious coffee and tortilla española (thanks Jonny!) consumed while waiting for the boil to finish, and the result is now fermenting away. Watch for Jay’s tweets, as he’s promised updates. We won’t reveal here what it is… but here are a few snaps from the day. Thanks to Jay and NTP for taking time out on a Sunday to brew!

IMBC visits GBBF

Early Tuesday morning, a delegation of Common and Port Street Beer House set out for London, to the Great British Beer Festival and a few of London’s fine beer establishments, to spread the word about IMBC (including some wonderful posters and flyers). First stop, Euston Tap, and after a lovely half, distribution of IMBC flyers and posters, we traveled on to Olympia.

The GBBF site is of course immense, and after taking in the sights of the various bars, we set to work: IMBC popping up all over Olympia Hall! We also ran into some familiar, wonderful beery faces, Magic Rock, Red Willow, Dark Star, Andreas Fält and Camden Town Brewery. A few beers may have been tasted along the way, too, including the astoundingly sour apricot Cantillon. And, who wouldn’t want to travel in one of these? Barrel-aged riding, it’s the future!

But, no rest for the wicked, there were more posters to be put up, and flyers to be handed out, people to be chatted to about IMBC, so onward we soldiered to Cask. Opened in 2009, Cask is located between Victoria and Pimlico stations, and has been showered with various accolades, including Best Cask Pub of the Year 2011. Cask was still glowing in Red Willow’s tap takeover on Monday night, and we were suitably impressed by wonderfully stocked fridges. After a brief taste of the lovely Mikkeller selection on draught, and the distribution of posters and flyers, we set off yet again to visit Cask’s sister bar, The Craft Beer Co on Leather Lane, in the borough of Camden. (At this point, it should be noted that a correlation exists between your photographer’s intake of beer and her ability to take photos… apologies for the lack of visuals from Craft, please take a look at their gallery page to take it in in all its glory!) Our mission accomplished in Craft, followed by a few refreshments, we set off for Euston to return to Manchester. What a day for beer in London!
